13 Mar 08 American Idol

I’m back from D.C. and had a great time, and I’ll have a big post about it once I get the energy worked up. That’s one thing about traveling: it leaves me dead tired. I slept 11.5 hours last night and still woke up tired. I’m doing much better now, though, but all I want to do is sit around, reading or watching TV. I’ve been catching up on my TV shows that I missed while I was gone, one of them being American Idol. I’ve gotten all excited about several of the performances I’ve seen this season, and these are my favorite Idols:

  1. Carly Smithson
  2. David Cook
  3. Brooke White
  4. Michael Johns
  5. Chikezie

I downloaded several songs and a couple of videos from American Idol on iTunes just now, and I’m really loving the video version of Come Together by Carly. I tried listening to the single that was released but it, weirdly enough, doesn’t sound anything like Carly. She sounds higher pitched and it really just doesn’t sound like her on the show or in the other singles. If you like her performance on American Idol of Come Together, I’d really recommend getting the video, but skip that single. David Cook’s Eleanor Rigby performance is also a favorite of mine. I think he and Carly stand to be the top two when it’s all said and done, and they’re certainly my pick for being the top two. I’d love for Carly to win this season, though.

10 Dec 07 SVU and Mario

I just watched the best episode of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit ever! Or should I say, “evar!!!1″. It was the new one, ‘Paternity’, and so as not to ruin any surprises for those of you who watch the show, I’ll just hint at its goings-ons: Jaws of Life, baby, and a big hug for Olivia. Although I think the episode is actually a week or more old by now, because I watched the recording of it on my DVR. That’s been the device that has allowed me to watch more TV than ever, because I never think to sit down and watch TV when I know a show is on, or I’m busy. I record everything now, and then watch it when I get a chance; I’m a big fan of the DVR, especially since it lets me skip commercials. Anywho, I was on the edge of my seat throughout the end of that episode, because it wasn’t standard fare for SVU.

I beat Paper Mario the other night, so now I’m waiting to go home for Christmas break before I begin Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. It’s my least favorite in the series, but it’s still a fun game. I’m also going to borrow Super Mario Galaxy from Todd and see if I can’t do well in it. I tried it the other night at his place, just for kicks, and I wasn’t great, but I wasn’t terrible either. I suck at depth perception in games like that, which causes me to over-jump, under-jump, and just generally suck at movement. I was the same way in Super Mario Sunshine, but Galaxy is a much prettier game, which I think will inspire me to keep at it, whereas Sunshine’s premise was pretty boring to me.

I have my first final, the one for numerical methods, this morning in less than an hour. I’m really not feeling too bad about it because I’m just comfortable with the material. Jess and I studied together last night and I’ve looked over my notes this morning. The girls, Todd, and I will be going to lunch after our finals are over; Todd will be joining us from work.

16 May 07 American Idol suddenly lost its appeal

Obviously America has no taste, and I’m referring to tonight’s American Idol results show. How on earth is Melinda not in the final two? I’m figuring it one of two ways:

  1. People got too confident that since she is obviously the best singer on the show she would be secured a place in the top two (I figured she’d win the competition, too), so they didn’t bother to vote for her;
  2. Vote for the Worst has a huge influence.

I think Jordin should’ve left. Yes, she’s good and has been great in past weeks, but last night she didn’t stand out. As Simon put it, her songs were all old-fashioned, and I didn’t think she had much energy behind her singing. I thought her performances were bland. Melinda was awesome and Blake had me tapping along with his songs. Blake makes the kind of music I would gladly pay money for, and Melinda is so much like a young Tina Turner that it tickles me.
