PS3 games are meant to be played in HD and they look amazing. And if you ever do get the TV, you have to rent/buy some Blu-Ray movies because they look just as awesome. You wouldn't think there would be much difference between standard def and HD, but once you go over to HD, you can't go back to standard. You MUST get an HDTV for the PS3!
