Last night for Mark’s birthday, I went with him and Jon to watch the UK-Florida game at a movie theater that was showing it for free. We thought the theater was pretty nice for doing that till we realized that this particular theater makes beaucoups of money from selling dinner and alcohol to the fans. It’s a pretty nice setup: you come early and they serve Applebee’s-type food plus various alcoholic drinks. They have little tables built into the theater, so you sit in the comfy theater seats and enjoy dinner while you watch your movie, or in our case last night, football game.
We lost, but we always lose to Florida (seriously—I think we’ve lost to them for the past 20 years or something), so that wasn’t a huge let-down. We did better this year against them than last year, losing 41-7 instead of 63-5. We actually got a touchdown, hurray! And holy crap, our Wyndham sacked Tim Tebow, Florida’s quarterback, and actually took him out of the game. Oh, my God, do the talkers love Tim Tebow. I think they spoke about him every two minutes before he was injured, just telling us how awesome he is and how he travels the world and everyone loves him, and then after he got taken off the field, they just would not shut up. We got updates on him constantly then; it was like there wasn’t even a game anymore, and we were all watching just to find out more about Tim Tebow. Jon and I pondered the idea of Tim Tebow Facts, a la Chuck Norris and Bruce Schneier.
Beyond the three hours of ESPN talkers gushing over Tim Tebow, I won stuff at the theater. I never win anything, and I won two things last night! The first was due to a trivia night thing the theater put on during half-time. The first question started out with “On November 20th, there’s a movie coming out…” and my hand shot into the air. He hadn’t even gotten the question out yet, so I had to lower my hand, but I was bouncing in my seat because I know various trivia about Twilight and, by gum, he was going to ask a question I could answer, I was sure of it. The question turned out to be listing all four books in the Twilight series in order. My hand shot up again, I got picked, and I stood up and recited them all. I won… *drum roll*… a DVD about UK football history. Ha. I’m going to give it to my brother, who is a much bigger football fan than me. Mark said he didn’t see anyone else even raise their hand, which makes sense since the theater was filled with mostly 1) old people and 2) men, neither of which are big in the Twilight demographic, I’d wager.
The second thing I won, I wasn’t even present for. I had gone to the bathroom and when I came back, Mark and Jon were both laughing. “You win stuff when you’re not even here!” Apparently, one of the theater employees had been asked to randomly name a seat, and he named mine. They left a $25 gift card for the theater, good for food and movie tickets, on our table. Jon and I promptly used it last night to take off a big chunk of our bill.
