homework, Blade Runner, and fingernails

Sunday is always filled with dread for me because it’s my last bit of freedom before classes and work start again. In particular, I dread having to do homework, probably because I’m such a procrastinator and I often reason my way out of doing homework now, then end up with a lot of it to do later, causing me to feel pressed for time. I was thinking over what homework I have to do today, though, and it really doesn’t seem that bad: I need to work on a C++ program for my networking class, and I need to do some problems for linear algebra. That leaves me with many more hours of precious freedom than I was expecting, huzzah.

I watched Blade Runner last night for the second time in my life, the first time being when I was about twelve, so I didn’t remember much of it. It was a really, really good movie this time around, and I’m glad I watched it. It put up a good fight against me trying to doze on the couch, too; I collapsed in bed around midnight like an old lady. I’m in college; shouldn’t I have the energy to stay up till the wee hours?? Anyway, back to Blade Runner. A lot of the music I heard was familiar because I have a Paul Oakenfold album where he worked with a lot of the music Vangelis did for Blade Runner. It’s all very pretty and sad, if you like trance-y, electronic music.

The movie has piqued my interest in reading books involving dystopian futures, humanistic robots, and genetic engineering. Here are some things that come to mind:

  • 1984 by George Orwell
  • Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
  • the Ender’s Shadow series by Orson Scott Card
  • Friday by Robert Heinlein

Do you guys have any other suggestions? I love creepy futuristic novels and movies; the only movies I have in mind are The Matrix and I Robot, so I definitely need movie suggestions. I’m looking around Wikipedia now.

I got my fake nail tips removed Friday night and, boy, was that gross. The salon let me soak my fingertips in acetone for half an hour, and I would lift my hands on occasion to see big clumps of thread-like material dripping from my fingers. My nails melted in the shape of the bowl, too, which was pretty cool. After the acetone bath was done and he had ground off the rest of the fake nails, I had him put a nice, dark red shade on my real nails, which are quite thin and flexible currently. Poor Todd came with me and, after a cursory trip around the mall, spent an hour and a half sitting in a chair outside, waiting on me. I didn’t know it would take so long, since these were the first fake nails I’d had; I should have given him my iPod to play with or something.

Well, Blade Runner is if not, my favorite movie. I loved Rutger Hauer’s character. This is almost inspiring me to write that “memorable movie charatcers” meme everyone is doing right now.

I loved the soundtrack. It goes so well with every scene. Maybe that is what contributed to me loving the film.

Anyway, if you liked the movie, and you like that sort of stories, I’d recommend the book in which the movie is based upon:”Do androids dream of electric sheep?” by Philip Dick.
