On the drive to Todd’s parents’ house earlier, we encountered a terrapin trying to cross the road. He was almost in the center, so in danger from both lanes of traffic. We turned around and came back, pulling up beside him in the emergency lane. We then watched anxiously as several vehicles passed, but fortunately none of them hit him. I hopped out and waited for more traffic before I ran across and grabbed his turtle-y butt. I tried looking at the side of the road he was trying to reach, but it was a sharp drop-off, so I couldn’t turn him loose there. I took him back to the car with us; he proceeded to crawl around my lap, getting dirt on my sweatpants. We drove a little ways till we found a nice field with a row of trees beyond it, where I dropped Mr. Turtle off. He was a pretty little guy with bright orange spots on his legs; I wonder if he enjoyed me stroking his shell and talking to him?
I was up at 6 a.m. this morning in order to make the trip to Todd’s parents’ with Todd and his brother. We’re here for Todd and his twin sister’s birthday on Sunday; it should be a nice get-together because everyone’ll be here, and there will be turkey + chicken and dumplings involved. I don’t envy Todd’s mom, who does all the cooking for these events. I’m sure Todd’s sister will help, and I’ll offer my services as well. I figure I’ll do some homework this weekend, if I can convince myself to do so; I hate doing homework on the weekends, but lord, who ever enjoys homework? That’s why you folks read my blog, I’m sure, so I can make obvious statements about things. I think I’ll hush up now and work on the first Commando Award.
What a wonderful rescue you did for the turtle. Thank you for taking the time to save its life!
