class summaries

I’ve now gone to each of my classes once, so I can make an initial judgement of how I’ll like them and the professors:

  • Calculus IV looks to be an all right class, though confusing. But hey, it’s calculus, right, so it’s not supposed to be easy. The professor has an interesting accent and looks startlingly like a leprechaun in the face, somehow. He also seemed to have a dry, subtle sense of humor and made us laugh. In his undergraduate days, Todd had him as a professor and liked him, which bodes well for me.
  • Databases will be a breeze for me, I think, based on my previous experience with database design and from what I’ve heard from other students who have had the class. The professor is a new one to the university and her personality didn’t immediately grab me, but there’s hope. She spoke quietly and very slowly, causing my attention to wander, but I think it was mostly just nerves; she told us it was her first class. I hope she turns out to have a more engaging personality so that it’ll be an enjoyable lecture.
  • Numerical analysis seems like another hard class but fortunately the professor seems like she’ll be good at explaining things. While she spoke with a foreign accent (she’s Korean), her phrasing and the way she spoke made it seem like she’s a native English speaker, which is great. She was also funny in a I’m-a-hard-ass-but-a-good-teacher kind of attitude, which suits me fine. There’s something to the combination of delicate appearance, small stature, and stern attitude that makes for a good teacher, in my experience. I remember a previous Spanish teacher I had that fit that description, and she turned out to be an excellent profesora.
  • The jury is still out on my logic teacher. While her lecture was interesting and engaging today, her personality grated on my nerves. She started out by informing me that students with laptops would have to sit in the back, so as not to distract other students. I always take notes on my laptop because I’m a very fast typer, but I’m also a front-and-center sitter, so that was annoying. She spoke to us in a very condescending manner, too, which always pisses me off with professors. I much prefer the relaxed attitude that some professors have, talking to the class as if they’re equals instead of fourth graders that require babysitting. It seems that, in classes where the professor is more conversational, the students are relaxed, get more readily involved in class discussions, and respond better to the professor. We’ll see what wins out, her interesting lectures (if they continue to be that way) or her annoying way of treating us.
  • My statistics professor got changed at the last minute. I was expecting one guy that Jess had had and enjoyed, but instead got someone who came from another university this year. He immediately seemed open and friendly from how he responded to the class chatting with him before class. The impression I got is that the subject will be reasonably difficult to understand, but that he’ll do a great job of explaining it. He was humorous, he’s a native English speaker that spoke loud enough, and he was friendly. I’m thinking this may be my favorite class this semester because of the professor. I checked out his reviews on RateMyProfessors and was tickled to see that everyone who had had him for statistics at his old university loved him as a professor.

  1. Meeting new teachers is always interesting! Unfortunately, it seems that with some good professors, there will always be bad ones as well. I hope all your professors turn out to be really great, though. :P
