cat scratches and stir fry

My Memorial Day weekend was spent at Jessica’s parents’ house, relaxing and enjoying good food. It was there that I photographed her kittens, and I also got scratched while catching one. Boy, did I upset the little thing. She got me back, though, by raking her claws over my wrist and the back of my hand, drawing blood. I was fine after some Neosporin because I spent half my childhood covered in cat scratches. When Jess received scratches, though, it wasn’t so easy, since she’s allergic to cats. Her hand swelled up and eventually started feeling numb, so she had to go to the doctor. He prescribed some antibiotics, but if those don’t work, they’ll have to call in a surgeon. How crazy is that? She said the numbness abated, though, so I think the antibiotics are working.

Three things of interest happened to me today:

  1. I received seven photo prints of my Flickr photos. I bought frames at a craft store, most of them on sale because I hate paying $10 for a frame, and framed them earlier. I’ll be taking two to work to add to the ones already there, and the others I positioned around the apartment. They’re mostly of flowers and plants, but one is of the girls. I’ve been needing something to perk up my gray, boring office, and brightly colored, highly saturated photos work great.
  2. I received an acceptance letter for a scholarship from the National Science Foundation that I applied for earlier this year; I’ll be receiving slightly over $1,500 in the fall semester. The way it was worded made it sound renewable, too, so long as I keep my GPA up and “make progress toward my degree.” With that and my other scholarships, I may even be able to avoid taking out another student loan.
  3. I stir fried a meal for the first time. Elaine from work told me it was the easiest method of cooking anything, and it really was. I threw some olive oil in a frying pan and then proceeded to throw food in. The stir fry included beef, red bell pepper, onion, water chestnuts, baby corn, peas, and carrots, and I only used a few tablespoons of oil, so I figure it was pretty healthy. I served it over rice with some low sodium soy sauce, and Todd even thought it was okay, which is good considering he dislikes most Asian food.

  • Ha! That’s one of the scholarships I had throughout most of my college time. Unfortunately, I already broke the contract because I can’t get in an internship before I graduate and I also don’t plan on working in a chemistry-related field in Pennsylvania for 4 years after graduation so the dang thing turns into a loan. Ugh. Chemistry sucks anyway :D

Talking about stir fry and rice is making me crave some Asian cuisine! I practically live off of plain old white rice.

  • Kyaaa, I used to live on stir fry about two years ago or so. I like adding Quorn tenders braised in General Tso’s sauce to the mix… so so good. I think you can get both at Wild Oats in the Green. I haven’t been there in so long that I can’t remember… but yeah, very very good.

  • Stir Fry = AWESOME. I used to live off stir fries back when I was in High School. And white rice is a must around here… god, I’m salivating!

  • Hey, my name is Dawn and I noticed that you work for Lexmark. I currently live in Charlottesville VA (not my first choice) and am working with a recruiter who seems to think that Lexmark would be a great place for me. I’m in marketing and pickings around here are tres slim. I’m not a stalker or an axe-weilding homicidal maniac, I’m just trying to get some insider feedback about Lexmark and Lexington (i’m assuming that’s where you are). Any info would be infinitely appreciated.

  • Congrats on the scholarship, and double congrats if it is indeed renewable! :)

I was checking out your photos on Flickr. Amazing work! Your flowers pics are awesome!
