I’m getting a ferret. I’ve been thinking about it for about a week now, unlike my cat purchase which was a very spur-of-the-moment decision. I’ve talked to Eric about it since he used to own a few, read online, and today bought a book on them. Ferrets seem like a pretty common pet, but I only found one book on them at the bookstore, surprisingly. I’m going to go tomorrow and buy a cage and other supplies that I need and get it all set up before lunch. At lunch, Todd and I will go and actually pick one out; I’m quite excited. Yesterday, he, Steve, Sue, and I went to a pet store and I held one of them. He was just a little guy and he kept chewing my fingers; he was teething. Eric commented that they’re like having a kitten for six years, and Todd calls them “tube rats” because they love zipping in and out of tubes. My big concern in the past with ferrets was that they stink. I was told by the pet store lady yesterday, though, that theirs are de-scented and fixed. The fixed part is really good, actually, because I read that females that aren’t spayed will actually die when they go into heat if they’re not mated. How crazy is that? I’ll be sure to post pictures of the little darling when I bring him or her home tomorrow. You guys that have had ferrets, how have you liked them?
On a completely unrelated note, what happened to Cathode Ray Coma?
My sister had a ferret and she was the cutest little thing. Somewhat of a pain in the ass to take care of, though. You have to make sure their cages are clean all the time otherwise they will start smelling.
Yeah, I’ve read that. Guinea pigs were like that, usually requiring a cage cleaning once a week or more. With ferrets, I read it should be daily or once every two days. Did your sister’s make much noise? You know my record with noisy animals. :D
Yuk yuk yuk. Hate ferrets ..stinky creatures!
They are pungent. One reason why you might have more trouble with their scent though, Jem, is that I’ve read it’s illegal to de-scent a ferret in the UK without a good medical excuse. It’s very common in the US, though. You’ve been smelling ferrets at their natural stinkiness. :D
In response to your response, no, her ferret wasn’t noisy at all. In fact, I don’t think I ever heard it make a noise!
unrelated note – I vanished a little while ago, into semi-hiding (and have slightly fallen off the blogging ‘scene’ which I think has done me good!)
The server error is because something broke and I haven’t felt the need to fix it, heh.
Ferrets DO NOT NEED TO BE DESCENTED. It can severely affect there health and does not change their smell. Neuturing/Spaying affects their smell. Wshing their bedding affects their smell and NOT bathing them stops them from smelling. These creatures do not smell if you look after them well, if you can’t don’t get one. Simple.
