new computer and a new layout

I put up a new layout! I’ve been wanting to do work on this site for a while now, but I never have any free time in which I’m not relaxing from work or class. Well, today I had a big full schedule of… nothing, so I decided to work on 3t7. I’ve viewed the layout in Firefox, Safari, and Opera and it looks fine, but I have me doubts about IE 6. If anyone wants to give it a look-see and tell me the bad news, I would appreciate it.

I made the images in Illustrator and Photoshop. The flowers were fun, and easy, to make:

  1. I used Illustrator’s pen tool to draw a petal, then I copied that petal, rotated it a certain amount, copied that, rotated, copy, rotate… Then I assembled all petals in a circular order.
  2. I used the pen tool to draw the stem, leaf, and grass.
  3. I applied a gradient to the petals, stems, leaves, and grass.
  4. I applied an inner and outer glow to the petals, flower center (just a circle), stem, and leaf.
  5. I applied drop shadows.

This evening I’ve got a family gathering to go to and Todd was going to go with me, but his sister’s car got hit this morning so he had to bring her his car to use until hers gets fixed; he and Steve left a few hours ago. It’s about a 3 hour drive each way, so he won’t be back in time to go with me.

Finals are this coming week and then, after Thursday, I’ll be done! I’m going home Friday to stay with my parents for a couple of days, then I’ll be back Sunday to hang out with Todd (it’s our 5-month anniversary), then Monday I start my second co-op term at Lexmark.

I got a new computer! Here are the specs on it:

  • NEC
    16X DVD±R DVD Burner Black IDE/ATAPI Model ND-3550A – OEM
  • MSI
    K8N Neo4-F Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard – Retail
  • Antec NSK 4400 Black/Silver 0.8mm cold-rolled steel construction ATX
Mini Tower Computer Case 380W Power Supply – Retail
  • XFX
    PVT73EUDJ3 Geforce 7300GT 256MB GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card -
    Retail
  • AMD
    Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester 2000MHz HT Socket 939 Dual Core
    Processor Model ADA3800BVBOX – Retail

I’m keeping my monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse, and printer, then I bought two sticks of DDR memory from Brent, since he’s upgrading his box.

The parts arrived the other day and I picked them up yesterday morning, since UPS was going to deliver at an inconvenient time. Todd got the majority of it assembled during his lunch break, then we finished off last night. When we went to test it, though, it wouldn’t start. Nothing came to life. We rechecked all the connections, tried a different power cord, tried a different slot on the power strip, everything. It turned out to be the power supply was doornail dead. When we tried the power supply from my old box, it worked fine. I sent NewEgg an email and they’ll replace it, but I have to send the entire case back. Goddamn it, the case is fine, especially with the motherboard, hard drive, and DVD drive already in place. Bastards.

Some good news, though, is that Debian booted splendidly when we used my old power supply and got the machine running. Todd was very dubious about it detecting all the new hardware, but I knew my beloved distro wouldn’t fail me. X wouldn’t start so my old NVidia drivers apparently don’t work with my new NVidia card, but that’s a minor setback. When I go home next weekend, I’m getting a 160G hard drive from Dad and giving my old box to Mom.

I would love to get a new system built. I’m running on a celeron right now, and I’m such an AMD freak it hurts. If the AMs weren’t so expensive, I’d have replaced my mobo, and proc in a heartbeat.

I’m jealous of your new system sans the case. The one I’m looking at has about 6 slots of hds :X :)

Too bad you don’t have a Fry’s out your way. There’s one out here in Houston that had some nice size hd’s for real cheap, and they were Seagates to boot.

I love this layout, very tidy and cute! I just checked it in IE though, and, unfortunetly, it does look a bit wonky. The Blog doesn’t start until after the sidebar stops. Like, the sidebar stops on the right, and then on the left, the blog doesn’t start until the area where the sidebar stopped on the right. Did that make sense? I don’t use IE though, and I don’t really update my version very often, so I don’t know wheter I have 6.0.

Yay, congrats on getting a new computer, though I didn’t understand any of the specifics XD

Ahem, the new layout looks great as far as I can see. Of course, I’m using IE 6 so the alignment isn’t right. The second column (content) is pushed down and doesn’t start until below where the navigation menu stops.

:\ I know, I know. Dump IE already! But I actually like it. Eek!

Nuts @ IE problems. I adjusted the width of the main area to be less wide, so maybe that’ll fix it.

*checks layout in IE in Linux* Yes, this looks pretty decent in IE 6.0, 5.5 and 5.0! I love this layout, too. The flowers and grass are TOO spiffy!

And let me guess…did Todd’s sister’s car get hit by…A MEXICAN???

Cute layout, I like the flowers. I’m completely hopeless at drawing in Illustrator. I’m afflicted ;)

Your computer sounds kickass. I’ve never built one before, but I’m taking a class this year that will remedy that ;)
