homework and pets

I’ve now gone through two days of classes and they’ve been all right. I’ve been working this morning on my first written physics assignment which involves a worksheet of simple vector stuff (drawing, determining magnitude, etc.) and several questions from the textbook. Besides that, I had to read a couple of sections in a chapter. I don’t know what I’ve got for COM 181 for Monday, but I’m sure there’s reading involved and possibly some written stuff as well. I’m enjoying both classes thus far because the COM 181 grad. student is funny in a dry, The Critic kind of way, even though I hated that show, and then physics has been interesting and the professor seems manageable. I really like his homework policy over my last physics professor’s: 50% of the grade comes from whether your homework is done, and 50% comes from if a couple particular questions are correct. With my last professor, 100% of your homework grade came from whether the questions were correct. Now granted I did all right with my homework, but the material was easier and I worked with a group of friends.

I’m at Todd’s parents’ house for the weekend. We got in yesterday and spent the evening talking with everyone. I found out his sister, Suzanne, read Ender’s Game back in the day and really enjoyed it, which was great for me to hear of course since that’s my favorite book, so we talked about that for a bit. Suzanne, his mom, and I also sat around the kitchen rehashing Todd’s cousin’s wedding that he, Suzanne, Steve, Todd, and I went to… last weekend? the weekend before? and my impressions of the various family members I met, in particular some that Todd’s family dislikes. The night ended with me half napping, half watching Die Hard 3 against Todd on the couch while everyone else got ready for bed. Suzanne and her mom are at the Relay for Life this morning, which reminds me that I need to find out when that is in Lexington if it hasn’t already been, because I would be interested in participating.

If Jess isn’t already there, she’s going to Chicago here next week for part of a summer internship position she has at her job. I need to send her my address so that she can mail me a post card! Both of my girls are lucky wretches this coming week: Jess’ll be in Chicago and Ashlee’s going to Florida with Doug. At the last movie night when they told me this, I said in a forlorn tone that maybe I can get Todd to take me to Wal-mart. Ashlee replied, “Only if you’re real good.” Haha.

Suzanne’s got a new kitten that, while adorable, has been driving me nuts this morning. She insists on getting on my lap and chewing on my hands, pouncing on things she ought not pounce on, and otherwise making a disturbance. I think I would like a pet until I visit someone who has one and then I decide that, no, pets just aren’t for me, unless it’s a fish that’s quiet and likes dirty water with no food. Ashlee has a cute little white dog named Arie (ARR-ee) that gets up-the-fuck-set if someone taps the floor and is otherwise like any other toy-sized dog in that she’s crazy and yippy, but I still like her. Unfortunately, dogs have to be walked and fed and cleaned up after and trained, and the cute little ones are expensive anyway, and I probably wouldn’t have enough time or patience for one in addition to all that. However, if someone wanted to give me a little dachsund or basset hound that could sleep on my floor in a pile of its own skin (in the case of the latter) and generally be cute, cuddly, and quiet, I would be very grateful indeed.

  1. Eww! Stay away from those toy dogs. Just another dumb trend that I wish would pass quickly. Thanks, Paris Hilton… Man, I just hate those dogs. Tiny, yuppy, whiney rats. I know if I had one, I’d probably accidently kick it as I was walking by. But then again, maybe thats why those dogs’ owners always carry them… I’m all for the dachshund :D You wouldn’t think that such a typically German dog would be ALL OVER Germany. Everyone has the little wiener dogs here :D

Man, I remember the horrors of summer physics two years ago. I had one of those professors that only gave you credit for correct answers on homework. That was one of the worst classes I ever took. Completely turned me off to physics, which I had previously loved.

  2. Y’know, one of my friends had a cuddly dachsund except it was really, really yippee until that one day when all of a sudden it was really, really quiet…

Every physics teacher I’ve ever met has always been odd… I think it’s because you have to be really smart to teach it. Once you pass a point on the intelligence scale, I think you just become eccentric automatically…

  3. Some species of animals were never meant for living inside a house or apartment in the city. These include dogs, cats, birds of any species, and human beings. Such animals become insane when penned inside concrete and steel and surrounded by asphalt and 24/7 noise.
