I just got back from having dinner with Scott. We just went to Subway and spent probably a total of twenty minutes together, but it was still nice to see him. I’ll have to corner the guy sometime when he’s not busy and I’m not working.
My first day of work went well. I first had to fill out some paperwork, then Ashley gave me a tour around the place and got me my security badge. From there, I waited for my manager, Neal, to pick me up. When he did, he talked to me for a bit, introduced me to some people, and took me to lunch, which he bought. From there, he introduced me to some other people, showed me around our building, and then released me into the lab in which I’ll be working. I have my own little cubicle with a Fedora machine (dual screen! shazam!) and a Windows box, as well as some shelves and a filing cabinet. Scott, my boss, came by and talked to me for a while. I was introduced to more people, Scottie (too many Scotts!) got my Lotus Notes set up, and then I was let loose to read various company things and begin working on my first project. I’m to make a web program that allows the user to choose various things to search for in a database, then display the results in a table. Sounds simple enough, and that is, but I first have to think about the structure of the database and get that set up. This is the part Scott said would be hairy, so I’ve been reading about database normalization.
I’ve got to get to a post office. I need to send my parents some insurance stuff for my other Volvo, but I also received a parking ticket for which I have to mail payment. I was parked between two white lines, as I’m supposed to be, but there was apparently some yellow line that I didn’t see, thus making it illegal to park there. Ergo, I have a $25 fine. Ridiculous. I was pretty annoyed about it this morning, but I’m even more annoyed at my health insurance: Mom said I received a letter from our insurance company today saying that what I’ll have to pay (I don’t even know if it’s for my gynocologist visit, from the wreck, or both) is $400-something. Thank God my Lexmark paycheck will be weekly…
And now… The girls went to get dinner before I left with Scott, Scott himself had to go check on his apartment (he’s moving), and I don’t have anything to do. It’s so weird not having homework or studying that needs to be done. It feels like I should be doing something, and so I’m kind of restless, but there’s really nothing I could be doing. I’ll probably read here in a little bit (I finished reading Shadow of the Hegemon the other day so I started Shadow Puppets, both by Orson Scott Card), but for now I’m going to take a shower.
glad you got to see him
Tis the season for parking tickets. Big ‘J’ got one at his ‘favorite’ campus, and he was no where near campus the day of alleged ticket (Dec. 9). He only learned of it yesterday when he went online to register for a class. Needless to say, no registration until the matter is straightened out.
I will say this: “oh God”. I had to do database normalisation to 5th normal form at college in my databases (MS Access, unfortunately, not anything interesting like MySQL) module when I was in college and it sucks. It’s one of the most boring things ever. :p
Database normalisation? Pfff…simple! I could have that done for you in 2 minutes!
It’s not that it’s especially hard once you get the hang of it.. but having to document every tiny little thing? That’s where the boring-ness comes in. Please don’t tell me you enjoy that kind of step by step punishment? ;)
Oh, and I’ve just realised my first comment made no sense. I said at/in college twice, harhar.
Oh, my comment was a load of crap anyway :D I have no idea what database normalisation is!
Oh right, lol. You should stay that way. It’s boring. I know I’ve said that twice already. :p That’s how boring it is!
only twenty minutes with scott? a whole christmas vacation and only saw him for twenty minutes. poor girl.
hey..you never returned my phone call. forget you.
Yeah, but you know what can happen in 20 minutes…if you’re fast enough ;)
that’s true. but i don’t think she’s fast enough. she’s sorta twisted like angelina was with billy bob thorton. has to wear the blood vile around her neck..hot candle wax.. yep. that’s sarah.
What… the… HELL are you talking about? Lol. That made no sense!
WOW! When did you get in a wreck???!!!! I am soooo out of the loop. Geez, you don’t get online for a while and you miss way too much. You’re okay aren’t you??
I’m fine now. I wasn’t even that bad off when it happened, it’s just that my car has been out of commission ever since. It was September 16.
Trin said it would only take 20 minutes. I said you weren’t fast enough or twisted enougj.
I went through the drudgery of normalization before discovering it had a name. I’m just thankful I don’t have to work with the conglomerate mess of duct tape known as MSSQL or the filesystem imitating a dbms known as MySQL. (Let the flammage begin!)
