How ridiculous is this? These terms of use are from the new Coldplay CD:
This CD cannot be burnt onto a CD-R or hard disk, nor can it be converted into MP3 for file sharing.
This CD has been manufactured for usage in regular CD players but might not play in the following players:
- Some CD players that have the capability of burning into an MP3 (such as portable players or car stereos)
- Some CD players that possess CD-R/RW functions (such as portable players or car stereos)
- Some car steros with satellite “Guidance” systems
- Some CD players or car stereos with hard disk recording capability
- Some CD-R/RW Recorders used for music
- Some portable CD players
- Some DVD players
- Some CD/LD Convertible Players
- Some Game Players
Although you can use your PC’s Windows program to listen to certain tracks, this does not mean that the CD can be played in all PC’s.
The first time that this program is used (in Windows automatic starter software) it gets registered in Windows File. Thus, programs already registered do not affect Windows operation.
Windows OS also uses the latest files.
This CD does not support MacIntosh PC software.
Except for manufacturing problems, we do not accept exchange, return or refund.
– Coldplay’s new CD has rules: No MP3s, no DVD players, no car stereos from BoingBoing
Another article about it that’s been interesting:
There are numerous ways to fail and not be able to listen to the music you paid for, even if you give up and use Microsoft XP Home with Windows Media Player. You certainly have to work mighty hard to play a simple CD. And they wonder why file sharing is still booming? The choice shouldn’t be between unconscionable terms, breaking the law, or giving up music.

Urgh, I saw this earlier. It’s so incredibly stupid
It would be nice, instead of just using the word “some,” if they actually gave brands or something. And these people wonder why no one wants to buy CDs anymore. I’m not going to take the chance of buying the CD to find out that none of my CD players play it…and then most stores won’t take back opened merchandise like DVDs and CDs, so you’re stuck with a CD that you can’t play. It’s really quite ridiculous.
I know I say this all the time, but that’s ridiculous. And then there was that Eisbrecher CD I ordered from over in Germany that PROVIDED EXTRA CDs with which to COPY THEIR MUSIC that looked exactly like the original. Yes, they actually GAVE you 2 CDs with which you could burn legal copies of their stuff because they realise that CDs do not last forever and owners should have the right to copies as long as they aren’t distributing them. Something like that here would be unheard of. Now apparently you have to have the “right” CD player to play a CD you just bought? And you don’t even have a list of players that you know would work? That’s a load of shit. For that, I wouldn’t even waste my money on any CDs that implemented this crap. This has definitely gone too far.
thats so stupid. i have a cd like that by an artist named Charlotte Martin and blah. i did a report on CD Piracy for school three semesters ago and it says that everyone has a right to one “personal” copy, besides the one that you have bought. but it doesn’t include putting it on your harddrive so you can have a copy on your iPod? what a load.
this is why i barely patronise cd stores anymore. well, firstly i can’t afford it and secondly, it’s so much easier to get it via the internet that it’s not funny..
hope you’re doing well. :D
the version I downloaded* plays on everything! LMAO
what do we learn children? fileshare & bittorrent all CD’s and thry have no restrictions…. heh heh
*not that I have downloaded said CD or any other form of media. Honest.
